a) Annual Conference
The cornerstone of IUMI's activities is its Annual Conference which takes place in a different host-country each September. It is, in all respects, the widest possible International Marine Insurance Forum and brings together marine insurers from markets around the world.
Prior to the Annual Conference, a great deal of work is done by the various Technical Committees to gather and process information and documentation from all Member Associations.
Highlights of the Conference include:
- Presentations by IUMI's Technical Committees on current research;
- Statistical data and analysis of marine casualties;
- Discussion of legal issues;
- Review of new methods of transportation;
- An insurance perspective on how various commodities are transported; and
- The developments on both national and international fronts.
IUMI has expanded the scope of the Annual Conference to include workshops that address key issues of international concern related to hull, cargo, loss prevention and liability.
Distinguished personalities from the international shipping community, including International Organisations, Classification Societies and shipowners, are invited to participate as guest-speakers and share their views and experiences with marine underwriters.
b) Education
IUMI particularly recognises the importance of education and training. During the Annual Conference, marine underwriters are exposed to the complex demands and challenges of the international marine market place. Exchanges of views, opinions, specialised knowledge and information are then collected and disseminated to IUMI's Member Associations and to local markets. This information enriches the wealth and breadth of "marine insurance culture" and enhances IUMI's own library which is constantly expanding and becoming more sophisticated as a resource to new members and future marine underwriters.
